Eddy Herrera

Talent, spontaneity, innate sense of rhythm and unquestionable charisma define the artistry of Eddy Herrera and adequately explain his ascent to acclaim as the "most international" merengue artist in the Dominican Republic. However, Eddy confesses that he has come a long way to be where he is today. Eddy was born one April 30th in the city of Santiago de los Caballeros.  Santiago would later serve as the platform for the discovery of his musical gift, and consequent rise to fame.He was a bright child and outstanding baseball player.

He developed an unusual passion for music and at 9 years of age Eddy José Herrera De Los Ríos (his full name) informed his parents that he wanted to sing and learn to play guitar. At 15, influenced by the romantic singers of the time (José José, Nino Bravo, José Luis Rodríguez and Javier Solís), he took a shot at the "Festival de la Voz" in his native city, and won second place. Motivated by this experience, he opted for participating once again two years later; this time he won first place and accolades from the jury.

When the time came to enter college, he was admitted to the School of Architecture in the Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra, and continued his brilliant career as a baseball player, rising in league category, where he was projected to be a future major league player. Two and a half years slid by before opportunity knocked on Eddy?s door; he met the famed musician, Wilfrido Vargas, who asked him then to join his stellar band. This was a challenge for Eddy Herrera who had never sung Merengue before.

After carefully analyzing this tempting offer, he decided to accept, but still considered music a temporary job."Initially, I looked at it like a fun opportunity that would allow me to travel the world. After some time I started taking it seriously and I told myself that I had to take advantage of this moment and seize everything of what being alongside Wilfredo had to offer.

Without my noticing, music slowly bewitched me and ultimately enveloped me forever."Three months after joining Vargas? orchestra, Eddy recorded his first album, entitled "El Jardinero." This landmark recording went on to become an intercontinental success. His performance of additional smash hits was catalyst to a flurry of world travel; Central and South America, Europe, United States and the Caribbean islands. He remained in the Wilfrido Vargas band from 1984 until december 1989.

It was during that last year he realized the time had come to release his own musical project. And so he did. His first solo album, "Eddy Herrera: Independiente", was released under MP Records.  "Things were difficult at first and I often came close to abandoning my goals as soloist, and go back with Wilfrido." It was only through sacrifice, perseverance and the unconditional support of a talented team that the artist confesses he was able to remain afloat during that crucial period. From this album, he promoted hits like "No Puedo Más" and "La Vieron," with surprising success in the Dominican Republic, where he was awarded the Best New Orchestra award ("Orquesta Revelación Del Año") at the Premios Casandra, the country?s most highly regarded awards ceremony.Eddy?s own light began to shine, but the process of making his way up to be considered one of the greats was gradual. "Success came gradually, not overwhelmingly or fast.

People knew me by my image, but my product was new and it took a bit for me to get it out there."After this, Eddy and his orchestra traveled all over their country, performing over 150 concerts during that first year. Then came the time to record a second album, which he called "Mi More," with hits like the title track and "Callejón Sin Salida." His third album, "Ámame," featured hits like "Si Tú Te Vas," "Tu Voz," and the super hit "Carolina," a song that defined a "before-and-after" point in Eddy?s artistic trajectory.

"It was because of the success of "Carolina," in 1993, that I was able to reach the Latin tropical sector in certain European countries, as well as break thru in Central America," Herrera recalls. Other studio productions followed, giving way to important songs that played a definitive role in his international growth process, such as "La Bailadora," "Nuestro Amor" and "Me Enamoré," which had radio airplay all over Latin America, as Eddy and his orchestra promoted them on tour. However, it wouldn?t be until 1997 that Eddy, commonly known as the "Galán del Merengue" would begin to truly grow stronger, for various reasons: he began to reach the top spots on the tropical popularity charts, as well as popular video countdowns.

He participated in Festival Presidente de Música Latina in Santo Domingo, alongside other artists like Enrique Iglesias, Thalía and Marc Anthony. He also performed at carnival in Barraquilla, Colombia, where he was awarded the "Congo de Oro" award for International Merengue.Between the years 2000 and 2002, Eddy won the "Merengue del Año" award three consecutive times in Dominican Republic for the tracks "Demasiado Niña," "Pégame Tu Vicio," and "Tú Eres Ajena." During this time he was invited for the first time to the Latin GRAMMY awards and Premio Lo Nuestro.Ever since this international breakthrough, Eddy has been doing an average of twenty tours every year and continues piling up hit after hit on radio, just as he did in 2003 alongside Magic Juan on the song "Para Siempre."

Aside from his musical projects, Eddy has also been cast in three Dominican films, entitled "Víctimas Del Poder," "Éxito Por Intercambio," and "Mi Novia Está De Madre"; plus a TV miniseries and the theater play, "West Side Story." At present, he has just finished recording his eleventh album, "Paso Firme," which opens the door for his new record label, "Premium Latin Music."

"This album is probably one of the most thorough productions of my career, one of the most elaborate, and has been given the kind of promotion I have always dreamed of, with a great team in this new label headed by Franklin Romero, who has a lot of faith in the album," says the artist. The first promotional single is titled "Como Diablos," written by Valerio de León and arranged by Edwin García. With it, Eddy celebrates 18 years as leader of his own orchestra, and over 30 world tours.Eddy is currently focusing on the album?s release to then fully embark on a promotional tour of countries where he has yet to win over the public?s support and love. In this new phase of the artist?s life, after ably placing himself among the most important figures of his genre, his powerful voice will surely remain a popular favorite for many years to come.
